The term and content of the bioeconomy arose from the pressure of global challenges, related to the existence and use of renewable biological resources such as: agricultural production, food, marine wealth, energy demand, etc. According to the EU definition, the bioeconomy includes sectors of the economy that use renewable biological resources and their conversion (excluding waste and by-products) into value-added products. The main goal set by the EU is to promote a strong bioeconomy that will enable Europe to live within its means. The development of the bioeconomy in the EU promoted through various policies. In Greece, both bioeconomics research and information and promotion policies lag behind at national and regional level.
